About the project

A Fusion of Heritage and Interaction

The new bar concept in Bratislava’s city center redefines the traditional bar experience by eliminating barriers between bartenders and patrons. Instead, it invites guests to become part of the drink-making process, turning the preparation into an engaging performance and fostering a deeper connection between staff and visitors.

Design Concept

The design draws inspiration from New Amsterdam, the original name of New York City, established by Dutch settlers who first inhabited what is now Manhattan. Known for its iconic grid-based urban planning, Manhattan’s structured layout serves as the conceptual foundation for the bar.

At the core of the space is a bar structure, imagined as a layered grid installation. This grid acts as both a functional and sculptural centerpiece, symbolizing the urban fabric of Manhattan. Within the grid, a suspended, fallen chandelier hangs on a pulley system, a nod to the Dutch heritage and the characteristic façade pulleys of Amsterdam. This unexpected element bridges history with contemporary design, adding depth and intrigue to the space.

Furniture and Details

The grid motif extends to the rest of the furniture, creating a cohesive spatial language. Slovak cultural references are seamlessly integrated into the design through the use of plastic blinds, a nostalgic element beloved in Slovakia. These blinds serve as partitions, subtly separating staff areas while maintaining visual continuity within the space.

By blending Dutch and Slovak heritage with modern functionality, the bar creates a unique atmosphere that celebrates cultural layers while inviting interaction and spontaneity. It becomes more than just a place to enjoy a drink—it’s an immersive experience where design, performance, and history converge.
