Redefining Space: A Modern Loft in Bratislava's Vydrica District
Located in the newly developed Vydrica district of Bratislava, this 132m² apartment is a study in modern, open-concept living. Originally a traditional four-room layout, the space was reimagined for a single, middle-aged man. All non-load-bearing partitions were removed, transforming the enclosed layout into a spacious and fluid loft.
The key to the apartment’s design lies in the strategic use of levels and platforms, which subtly define each functional area without the need for dividing walls. This is achieved through a series of horizontal podiums, or “stages,” where each living function performs its role—whether for intimate solitude or social gatherings. This staging concept ensures that the space remains open while clearly delineating different areas for daily life.
The guiding principle of the design was to avoid conventional compartmentalization. Instead, the apartment maintains a sense of openness by distinguishing the primary zones—day and night activities—using subtle horizontal platforms. This preserves the spaciousness and grandeur of a contemporary loft while offering a seamless transition between different uses. The result is a sophisticated, modern living environment that balances openness with function, emphasizing the luxury of space and the fluidity of modern urban living.
