About the project

Bakery OLIS: A Space for Community and Tradition

By redefining the dining experience, OLIS Bakery demonstrates the power of architecture to shape social interactions, creating a space that is not only functional but also deeply meaningful.

The design of OLIS Bakery transforms a long, linear space into a cohesive blend of functionality and social engagement. Divided into two distinct zones, the bakery balances retail and dining, offering a modern reinterpretation of communal traditions rooted in Bratislava’s cultural history.

At the entrance, a 4-meter-long stand-by table anchors the retail zone, where customers can enjoy freshly baked goods. This design pays homage to the tradition of communal dining tables, a hallmark of Bratislava’s social culture before the pivotal date of November 1989.

The heart of the bakery lies deeper within, where a striking 6-meter-long communal table accommodates up to 20 guests. This feature serves as more than a functional dining element; it becomes a social hub, fostering interactions and building a sense of community. The design encourages serendipitous connections among diners, blurring the boundaries between strangers and friends.

This communal concept has been enthusiastically embraced, with patrons seamlessly adapting to the shared dining experience. The table’s scale and materiality reflect its role as a central feature, combining aesthetic appeal with a deeper social function. The bakery’s popularity as a breakfast destination underscores the success of this approach, creating a vibrant space where design, tradition, and community converge.
